Where has my style gone?

Where has my style gone? As I write this festive blog post, I sit in my home-office, wearing comfy sweat pants. Sitting across from me, my husband is working in similar attire. Edda, in Munich, Germany—who has not been able to travel to the United States for months—has been working from her home office, usually dressing casually as well. Edda and I connect regularly on the phone and, while chatting last week, she shared with me how out of practice she feels with getting dressed up and putting together outfits. She had some important business errands to run and felt like she completely forgot what her personal style was (though I would argue that is impossible with her strong personal style…but I digress). Just remembering how to combine certain items in her wardrobe felt like a challenge, as it took much longer than usual to pull an outfit together. If I’m honest, I think the same goes for me—I feel out of practice and don’t totally know my wardrobe anymore.
While casual and comfy clothes have a place, I also notice a distinct difference in my mood, confidence, and approach to the day when I make the effort to put an outfit together. It gives me more purpose, personally, and my day, importance.

While casual and comfy clothes have a place, I also notice a distinct difference in my mood, confidence, and approach to the day when I make the effort to put an outfit together. It gives me more purpose, personally, and my day, importance. Over the past few months, my husband and I have made a point—amidst the at times repetitive routine of COVID life—to plan special evenings at home together. We make the home cozy, dress up for one another and have a nice dinner and wine amidst candle light. Through the planning of the evening and expression of our outfits we show one-another mutual care and respect. It sets the mood, communicates the importance of the event to the other person and, most importantly, makes me feel beautiful. I always enjoy the feel of the fabrics, the look when I glance down my sleeve or leg and see textures, the flow of the garment as I move. The days that I do have Zoom meetings with clients I do my hair, make up, and put on a nice outfit (or top at least). It makes me feel more energetic and driven.

With the holidays around the corner—most of us will not be able to spend them with family—, days getting shorter, and busyness abounding, it can be a tough season. It’s quite literally the darkest and most challenging time of the year 2020, on what has been an unquestionably harder than normal year. Regardless, we would encourage you to embrace the spirit of the season. Dress up, find the right styles, and make it special. Our gatherings may be more intimate this year but that should not make them any less important. Let us find the quiet moments in between and remember the things that are truly important through this unique holiday season.

As a starting point for outfit inspiration, here is a shoot we did with the IGOR Fall/Winter 2020 collection earlier this year. We personally love the festive feel of the fabrics the designer chose for this collection—green taffeta, black tule and jacquard, sequins—and hope you like it too. Just remembering putting on these sparkling clothes brought back some holiday cheer. Hopefully they bring you some joy and inspiration as too. We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday season.

Thinking of you all warmly,

Anna & Edda
